A Marriage at Sea

Elmhirst reconstructs Maurice and Maralyn Bailey's 118 days adrift in the Pacific after a whale sank their boat in 1972, but the book's real subject is the marriage itself, an ordinary, somewhat mismatched partnership tested past any reasonable limit. She builds the account from the couple's own logs and later interviews, and the writing is at its strongest in the opening stretch, when the immediate crisis of survival, rationing, and makeshift rafts drives the pace. The narrative slows considerably once rescue arrives, shifting into a quieter, more ambivalent register about what happens to two people who return to ordinary life after sharing an extraordinary ordeal together. That imbalance is a genuine structural risk, but it's also the point: survival stories rarely examine what a couple owes each other once the emergency ends.
