Christofi, writing from a British-Cypriot vantage point, traces Cyprus's history from myth through its brutal twentieth-century partition, using his own family's position as both insider and outsider to hold the island's competing Greek and Turkish narratives without fully collapsing into either. Critics have praised the prose's lightness given how heavy the material is, the 1974 partition and its long aftermath, while also flagging specific overreaches, including some dubious claims of Cypriot cultural firsts. It's a book that mostly succeeds as a personal, place-based history precisely because Christofi doesn't pretend to full neutrality about an island his own family comes from.
