Mother Emanuel

Sack anchors his history in Charleston's Emanuel AME Church across two centuries, from its founding by formerly enslaved worshippers through Denmark Vesey's rebellion to the 2015 massacre, and the book's structure treats the 2015 shooting not as its climax but as one recurrence in a much longer pattern of violence against the congregation. The material on forgiveness is handled with particular care: Sack doesn't present the survivors' public statements of forgiveness toward the killer as simple grace, but excavates the theological and historical weight, and the internal disagreement, behind that response within Black Christian tradition specifically. The book's ambition is genuinely double: institutional history of a major Black denomination and intimate account of a specific community's grief, and Sack largely manages to serve both without letting either crowd out the other.
