Once the Deed Is Done

Seiffert's Booker-shortlisted novel picks up a strand of postwar history rarely dramatized in English-language fiction: the millions of displaced persons and former forced laborers stranded in occupied Germany once the shooting stopped. Told through a Red Cross officer and a rotating cast of local Germans and refugees, it resists the momentum of a conventional plot in favor of accumulated, unresolved dread, a choice reviewers have flagged as both the book's strength and its friction point, since several threads simply peter out rather than resolve. That refusal to tidy things up is deliberate: it mirrors an occupation in which guilt, complicity, and survival were never neatly sorted either. The prose is plain almost to a fault, but the moral seriousness underneath it is real.
