The Anxious Generation

Haidt's diagnosis is bold and, on the data, contested: he treats the post-2010 shift from unsupervised outdoor play to phone-based childhood as the primary driver of teen depression and anxiety, and other researchers have pushed back hard, arguing the underlying studies are largely correlational and that reverse causation (anxious kids retreat to phones) is at least as plausible as his causal story. What holds up regardless of that fight is the book's real contribution: four concrete, testable norms (no smartphones before high school, no social media before sixteen, phone-free schools, more independent play) that have already reshaped school policy debates. It reads more like a manifesto than a synthesis, and that urgency is both its power and its weakness.
