Audition

Kitamura builds the novel around a single unresolved encounter: an unnamed actress meets a young man who claims to be the son she never had, and the book splits into two halves that each treat this claim as literally true in incompatible ways, one where she has no children, one where the young man has always been hers. Rather than resolving which version is real, the structure asks readers to hold both simultaneously, using the disorientation to interrogate performance itself, how identity, motherhood, and marriage are all roles rehearsed and revised rather than fixed facts. It's a formally audacious bet that pays off less as psychological realism than as a controlled experiment in how narrative certainty gets manufactured and withdrawn.
