Opening the first installment of a planned four-book cycle, Aw follows a Malaysian-Chinese family relocating to a failing inherited farm in the late 1990s, using sixteen-year-old Jay's tentative relationship with the farm manager's son to open onto larger fractures of class, sexuality, and post-colonial inheritance. The prose is spare and withholding by design, letting silences between family members carry as much information as dialogue, which works well in scenes of domestic friction but leaves the shifting first- and third-person perspectives feeling more effortful than illuminating once the central romance settles into a familiar rhythm. As an opening movement it's more interested in atmosphere and unresolved tension than in resolving anything, a choice that will only fully pay off once later volumes arrive.
