The Assassin

The second Ed Barnes thriller trades Fletcher's diplomatic memoir voice for pace, and mostly it works: reviewers keep circling back to his insider access to the mechanics of hostage negotiation and climate diplomacy, the two engines driving this plot. What distinguishes it from generic airport espionage is the texture of real corridors of power rendered by someone who sat in them, rather than researched them secondhand. The kidnapping plot and the assassination subplot occasionally compete for oxygen, and the prose leans procedural over lyrical, but the authenticity of detail carries scenes that a lesser thriller writer would have to fake.
