Twenty Years

Rasmussen, who covered Afghanistan for years as a journalist, builds the book around a handful of individual lives rather than a policy retrospective, following people like Zahra, married off as a teenager and later escaping an abusive marriage during the 2021 evacuation, and Alex, who hoped to open Kabul's first gay bar before the Taliban's return made the idea unthinkable. The structure lets betrayal accumulate from the ground up: American promises, Taliban brutality, and the world's attention all fail these people in different ways and at different points across the twenty years the title names. What distinguishes the book from other Afghanistan-withdrawal accounts is its refusal to treat 2021 as the whole story; the disappointments start well before the fall of Kabul and the book insists on tracing them back.
